We have a model: a school-centered one. Our work begins in a struggling underserved inner-city school, and our community outreach is to the nearby police precinct and a neglected neighborhood facility. At all sites we enlist community volunteers, from parents to police and beyond, so that all develop a new sense of belonging and pride in their community.

Publicolor is very important to me. Before Publicolor I felt as if I did not have a place in society. I also felt that everything in my life was negative. When I joined this program I started feeling good about myself because I was making a difference in many people's lives. I also love the transformation that my influence had on the people that were also misguided like me. That is why Publicolor is important to me.

Words cannot begin to express my gratitude to, your staff, and the volunteers for the wonderful transformation that Middle School 117 went through. It is hard to imagine that before our partnership, the school was a place where students were expected to learn. The dull colors led to an unattractive environment that was miraculously transformed to give way to a place where colors welcome students and visitors with the expectation that learning will be meaningful and fun.

It was terrific to see the work of Publicolor at Junior High School 99 in Manhattan. I appreciate the value that your exciting project brings to the educational experience, both in terms of building community involvement and engendering a sense of pride and ownership within the student body. It is important to engage private citizens as well as our city's corporations and foundations in our public school system.
